FAQ
Common questions about BetterMultiThreaded — plugins, small servers, CPU cores, stability and how the benchmarks were measured.
Will my Paper plugins work?
Only plugins that support Folia. BetterMultiThreaded uses Folia’s regionised scheduler, so plugins that are not marked folia-supported will not load, just like on Folia itself.
Does it help a small server?
Yes, as soon as players gather in one place. In our packed-spawn test (151 players inside a 100-block radius, 648 chunks) the region went from 22.8–25.2 to 15.8 MSPT. DAB, async mob spawning and the tick micro-optimisations also save work on every core, at any player count. Sharding itself only switches on when a region is busy.
With a small crowd you may need to lower auto.min-players, or shard a world by hand. See Installation.
How many CPU cores do I need?
worker-threads: 0 picks cores ÷ 4 (2 to 8 workers) and the region thread helps as well. 4 or more CPU threads are recommended; more cores give more headroom.
Is it stable?
It runs our own 400+ player network every day. Our final stress runs (150–200 bots) recorded 0 watchdog warnings and 0 player disconnects.
How were the benchmarks measured?
MSPT and TPS come from /tps (5-second window) and spark profiles. Stress runs used 150–200 bots on a copy of a live Towny map on a Ryzen 9 9950X in September 2026. “Folia” is the same build with sharding switched off.
Paper was not benchmarked separately: when every player is inside one area, Paper and Folia both tick that area on a single thread, so both hit the same one-core ceiling. Live numbers come from our production Towny server at 405–410 players online. The full tables are on Benchmarks.
Which Minecraft and Java versions does it need?
Minecraft 26.2 and 26.3. You get one jar per version; both need Java 25.
Is it affiliated with Paper or Folia?
No. BetterMultiThreaded is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by PaperMC, the Folia project or Mojang.
