BetterMultiThreadedInstallation

Installation

Swap your server jar for BetterMultiThreaded, start once, and check what it does with /tps.

Requirements

Java25
Minecraft26.2 or 26.3, one jar for each
PluginsFolia-compatible only
CPU4+ threads recommended; more cores give more headroom

Install

  1. Install Java 25 and check that every plugin supports Folia.
  2. Replace your server jar with the BetterMultiThreaded jar for your Minecraft version (26.2 or 26.3) and start the server once.
  3. Open config/canvas-server.yml and find the sharded-regions section. The defaults work as they are.
  4. Run /tps.

Back up your server before you change server software, as you would for any jar swap.

What the defaults do

Sharding is on, in automatic mode. Out of the box a region is sharded when it has:

  • 40 or more players and 22 MSPT or more, or
  • 80 or more players, whatever its MSPT.

It goes back to a single thread when it drops below 30 players. Each condition has to hold for 20 seconds before the mode flips, so a region does not flap in and out.

sharded-regions:
   enabled: true
   auto:
      enabled: true
      min-players: 40
      activate-mspt: 22.0
      force-players: 80
      deactivate-below-players: 30
      hysteresis-seconds: 20

Every option is explained in Configuration.

Small server?

With fewer players the automatic thresholds may never be reached. Two ways to shard anyway:

  • Lower auto.min-players so the rule matches your crowd.
  • Shard a whole world by hand:
/bmt foliaworld <world> 4

Level 4 uses 8-chunk shards, the smallest size. Level 0 puts the world back to plain Folia. See Commands & permissions for the levels in between.

Check that it works

Run /tps. Under every region a line shows its mode: Folia (single thread), or SHARDED with the shard size, the shard count and the live speed-up. The [Split ⚡] button next to a single-thread region shards it in one click.

Turning it off

Sharding has a kill switch that needs no restart:

sharded-regions:
   enabled: false

Then run /bmt reload. To drop every manual split at once and keep the feature available, use /bmt folia panic.
