Kart items

Mario Kart-style items in kart races — rows of item boxes, the roulette, SPACE to use, odds by race position and every item.

Kart and ATV arenas (/race create <name> kart or atv) replace the classic power-ups with Mario Kart items. Bike and foot races keep the power-ups as they were, and so do F1 arenas, where SPACE is the DRS button (f1.items: false).

How it works

  1. Item boxes sit in rows across the road, up to three rows per lap on the straightest stretches, never on the starting grid. A row has 3 boxes on roads up to 9 wide and 5 on wider roads, so there is always one on the centre line.
  2. Drive through a box and a short roulette spins next to your speedometer.
  3. The item is yours to keep until you use it. It is shown next to the speedometer; your inventory is never touched. While you hold one, boxes are left for the others.
  4. Press SPACE to use it. Hold S while pressing SPACE to throw a green shell backwards.

The items

ItemWhat it does
TurboA short burst of speed.
Triple TurboThree turbos, one per press.
BananaDropped behind you. The next kart to drive over it spins out.
Green ShellFired straight ahead along the track. It hits the first kart in its path, you included once it has had a moment to get away.
Red ShellHomes in on the racer directly ahead of you, following the track through every corner. With nobody ahead, it flies like a green shell.
TNTThrown about 10 blocks ahead. It explodes after a short fuse, or as soon as a kart touches it, and spins every kart within 4.5 blocks, the thrower too.
Star6 seconds of immunity and extra top speed. Any kart you touch spins out.
ShieldAbsorbs the next hit, or runs out after 10 seconds.

Getting hit

A hit spins the kart out for a second: it slides on along its line while it turns a full circle, the driver has no control and the kart keeps a quarter of its speed. After that it can’t be hit again for 2 seconds, so nobody gets chained. A shield takes the hit instead; a star or a finished racer can’t be hit at all.

Odds by race position

Item chances depend on where you are in the race. The leader gets defensive items, and the further back you are, the stronger the table, so the back of the field always has a way to catch up.

PositionItems (weight)
LeaderBanana 40, Green Shell 30, Shield 20, Turbo 10
Front thirdBanana 25, Green Shell 25, Turbo 20, Red Shell 15, Shield 15
Middle thirdRed Shell 25, Turbo 25, TNT 15, Green Shell 15, Banana 10, Triple Turbo 5, Star 5
Back thirdTriple Turbo 30, Red Shell 25, Star 20, TNT 15, Turbo 10

The thirds count only the racers still racing. Every weight, duration, speed and radius is in kart.items.
